You’ll be able to watch cats eat, sleep, and play while you enjoy your coffee, however you obviously would not be able to take a hot beverage around a cat. The idea is to draw more people in to adopt cats that need a home. The idea is very popular overseas so the Tree House Humane society is going to give it a shot in Chicago.
“Ideally it’s a draw to get people into the facility, to help get more cats adopted, In the end, if it becomes a popular thing and it can generate some revenue, then that revenue will go right back into our programs.” – Tree House Executive Director Dave de Funiak
The facility will house about 150 cats. In order for the Chicago City Council to approve the business they had to create a new ordinance. Hot coffee provides a serious risk to a feline. Debra Silverstein introduced an ordinance that paves the way for other animal shelters to open cat and even dog cafes. The ordinance is safe for the cats.
Cat Town, a nonprofit shelter in Oakland, Calif, seen pictured above, opened a similar joint in Oakland California. The nonprofit shelter saw its adoption rate more than double as a result. The Tree House Humane Society has the same goal, they want to double or even triple their adoption rate.
